Beetle

After the success of our twelve pound blade spinner "Surgical Strike" at the Nationals  I decided to design and build a beetle weight (3lbs.) as my first bot. Until now my dad has done most of the design (and nearly all the funding) of our robots. He said if I wanted a beetle I had to do it myself!

I already had a pair of 28 mm Banebots 20:1 gearmotors which I had won as a third place prize at Motorama. I decided to combine the best of "Surgical Strike" with the simplified rear crossmember of "Relic".

I used Solidworks to design the whole bot. The front section is very much like "Surgical Strike" except the belt and pulleys are underneath to protect them from top mounted spinners.

The flat lexan rear panel allows easy mounting of the gearboxes and also acts also as a roll over bar. The 3/16ths thickness should be strong enough (the opponent has to get past the blade first!)

Pile of parts! Here are the "Ant" wheels from RMP, the Banebot ESC and gearmotors.

Here are the pulleys and belts from SDP-SI and a 2.4 GHz Spectrum RX.

Excel spread sheet

I created a spread sheet to keep track of the parts required and the total weight.

The aluminium tubes for the chassis should arrive tomorrow.
